Train as a Professional Counsellor

The CPCAB Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling is the next step for students who are ready to move from learning counselling skills into professional counselling practice.

At South West School of Counselling, we know that beginning Level 4 is a big step. It can feel exciting, challenging, inspiring, and sometimes a little daunting too. That is why we place such importance on creating a warm, supportive learning environment where students feel encouraged, valued, and able to grow in confidence throughout their training.

This course is not just about gaining a qualification. It is about developing the knowledge, self-awareness, practical skills, and professional confidence needed to work safely and ethically as a counsellor.

Become the Counsellor You Are Meant to Be

A Supportive Place to Learn and Grow

We believe counselling training should feel engaging, relational, and human.

Our teaching combines professional standards with warmth, encouragement, and genuine support. Students learn through tutor teaching, group discussion, experiential learning, skills practice, reflection, and personal development work.

Training at Level 4 often becomes a deeply rewarding experience. Alongside developing professionally, many students notice positive changes in their confidence, self-awareness, communication, and understanding of themselves and others.

There is hard work involved, but there is also connection, laughter, encouragement, and a strong sense of community within the group.

Learn Through Experience, Connection, and Practice

Throughout the course, you will develop the practical counselling skills and theoretical understanding needed to work therapeutically with clients in a professional setting.

Topics include:

  • Building effective therapeutic relationships
  • Advanced counselling skills and practice
  • Working ethically and safely
  • Understanding mental health and emotional wellbeing
  • Human development and attachment
  • Diversity, equality, and inclusive practice
  • Reflective practice and self-awareness
  • Safeguarding and professional boundaries
  • Working with loss, trauma, anxiety, and emotional distress
  • Developing your own therapeutic approach and professional identity

The course encourages students to think deeply, reflect openly, and develop confidence in their own way of working therapeutically.

Client Work and Placement

A key part of the Level 4 Diploma is completing supervised counselling practice within a placement setting.

This gives students the opportunity to begin working with clients while receiving ongoing support from tutors and clinical supervisors. We understand that starting placement can feel like a big step, and we aim to support students throughout the process of preparing for and securing placement opportunities.

Students are also encouraged to engage in personal therapy during training as part of their professional and personal development.

Entry Requirements

Applicants will normally need:

  • A recognised Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Studies or equivalent
  • A readiness for professional training and self-reflective learning
  • Good written and spoken English skills
  • The ability to work with emotional depth and personal development

All applicants will be invited to attend an interview as part of the application process.
